Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge Proposal | Kyle + Meg
Adventure is an underlying theme for Kyle and Meg’s relationship. And the story of their Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge Proposal is no different.
Kyle and Meg’s adventure first began after meeting online while Kyle was stationed in Germany. Even though they were an ocean apart, something clicked. So when the two finally met up in Newport a first date, Kyle remembers, “I think even at that point we knew this was different.”
When I asked Kyle what he loved most about Meg, his answer was touching:
“I love her heart. She loves deeply and consistently places us (and me) above herself. It’s hard not to fall in love with her. I love her adventurous spirit and strength, always up for a new adventure and never discouraged when things get tough. I love the way she loves her family and friends. It may sound odd, but it’s a testament to her unending compassion…Her compassion and caring are unmatched and she has the biggest heart, I couldn’t do what I do as an Army officer without her. “
After about a year and a half of dating, Kyle knew this was meant to be a forever thing and started planning his proposal. He told me he wanted to remember it all “the emotions – the faces, the smiles, the tears, the nervousness” and “the excitement for the life and adventure to come.”
The Proposal
Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown RI held some fond memories for the couple, so Kyle knew that he wanted to propose there. So we planned for a proposal at Sachuest the day after Thanksgiving. About a week before the proposal, a little bit of adventure started creeping into the plan. The weather wasn’t looking great, so we bumped the proposal up to Thanksgiving morning. If that had been the only adventure, that would have been smooth sailing. But what we didn’t know was that there was a road race going on that would block off the road to Sachuest Wildlife Preserve!
Fortunately, I found out a day or so in advance and after a little hustle we got a new plan in place. And all of it hinged on getting Meg out of the house for a sunrise walk on the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge trail. I knew this was going to be tough, but Kyle succeeded, and from there the proposal went perfectly! Meg remembers having some sort of premonition that he might propose because some incidents from the previous week made her suspicious, but she was still surprised. And she said yes! Lots of happy tears followed and it was the perfect start to Thanksgiving day!
