Oftentimes when people think about proposing in Newport, they imagine proposing in the summer! But, I can assure you that a winter proposal in Newport can be just as magical! Jude’s proposal to Melissa at King’s Park was no exception!

With a forecast of rain, we opted for a location that would provide some cover in the event of rainfall: the King’s Park gazebo. King’s Park is located just off the downtown and right before the Ocean Drive. In the summer, it is occasionally booked for weddings and concerts, but in the winter it is pretty quiet. And as it was a couple weeks before Christmas, I was excited to see some festive decorations around the park which gave a special Christmas feel to the photos.

At the appointed time, Jude arrived and walked up to the gazebo where I had set up some decorations for him. Melissa almost didn’t want to go up there because she thought they were for someone else! But when Jude got down on one knee, she discovered otherwise! After some happy tears, we took some engagement portraits in the park before heading over to Ochre Court for more! Ochre Court is a stunning backdrop for a winter proposal in Newport, its tree lined entrance filled with twinkling Christmas lights. It required a short drive from King’s park, but it did not disappoint!

Tips for a Winter Engagement in Newport

I have a few tips for you folks planning on a winter engagement or proposal in Newport! First, dress warmly in layers! It’s going to be cold and windy, but if you dress with a nicer layer underneath, you can probably brave a few minutes out in the cold to get some good pictures. Second, everything will be dull and gray: the trees, the water, the sky, etc. This doesn’t mean that your pictures need to be dull and gray – your outfit choice can influence that for the best! Opt for colors and light, warm neutrals to break up winter’s gray palette.
