Congratulations to Al and Lauren on their recent surprise engagement at Gurney’s in Newport!

The Plans

It was so much fun to see this special moment come together after weeks of planning and coordinating. I take proposals very seriously, because you only get one shot to get it right! So when Al contacted me about photographing his surprise proposal, we did a lot of talking about his plans for proposal day. After ruling out the Newport Mansions, we met up and walked the downtown, looking for the perfect place to propose in Newport. With the downtown decked for the holidays it was really hard to decide. Al finally settled for somewhere between Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharf!

Later, after consulting with some friends, Al decided instead to propose at the ice rink at Gurney’s in Newport. It was a great idea! With the Newport Bridge and the Goat Island Lighthouse in the background, you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place for a proposal in Newport! We sketched out a map of where he was going to propose and I found a hiding spot nearby. We did a good job being sneaky ninjas, because we managed to do all of this without Lauren finding out!

The Proposal

When the day finally arrived, Al and Lauren enjoyed the Mansions and a trip to Diego’s with friends. Then, they arrived at the Gurney’s ice rink. It was windy and bitter cold, so Lauren needed some convincing to take the trip out to lighthouse. Thankfully her friends kept things on track and Al surprised Lauren with a proposal near the lighthouse. And she said yes! It was so beautiful to see their joy, and the excitement of her friends who were cheering them on. After warming up in the hotel, we took some photos (okay, maybe a lot of photos) and made some memories in the downtown.
