What to Wear For Senior Portraits
When students hire me as their senior portrait photographer in Rhode Island, one of the first things they want to know is what to wear for senior portraits! And I think it’s an excellent question. Having an outfit that you look and feel good in will help you feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Here’s a few basic questions to ask yourself when deciding what to wear for senior portraits.
1. Does it Meet School Requirements?
Boring, but important. My first suggestion is to check your high school’s requirements for senior pictures. Oftentimes you will receive a detailed email or handout from your school to tell you what you can and can’t wear. Make sure at least one of your senior picture outfits fits the requirements so you won’t be excluded from the yearbook or forced to have your pictures retaken. Most often, school are looking for your clothing to be modest and free from offensive slogans. Pretty basic, but occasionally guys will be required to wear collared shirts so it’s a good idea to watch out for that.
2. Does it Fit?
I know this one sounds obvious too, but sometimes it’s not! Try your outfit on ahead of time and look in the mirror. Make sure it fits you the way you want it too. Try different poses, like squatting down, leaning forward and walking. You want to make sure you like the way it looks from different angles, and that you won’t have to be constantly tugging you skirt down to cover up!
3. Is it Comfortable?
If it fits well, the next thing to ask is “Is it comfortable?” I take senior portraits outdoors which means you will be sitting, standing and walking on uneven dirt, sand or grass. Those cute shoes might not be so comfortable in the sand or rocky gravel. So, wear something comfortable, or bring a change of shoes.
4. Is it You?
Senior portraits are a celebration of your accomplishments and the person you have become over the last twelve years. They should reflect your style, interests and personality. Sometimes it’s hard to narrow down your options for senior portrait outfits. That’s okay! You can bring a couple. If you can’t decide between a formal or a casual look, bring one of each. You can also bring a special uniform, letter jacket, or even theatre costume to celebrate a special hobby or interest.
